Introduction

Some of you have been with us for over a decade, following us through the ups and downs of our journey. Some of you are new to our work and are still learning about it. Whether this is your first or your tenth blog, I wanted to take a time to tell you a little bit about Zawadisha. Zawadisha began nearly 20 years ago as an informal microlending program. In 2004, I was in Kenya completing research for my master's degree, traveling between towns in dodgy minibuses, communicating via internet cafes, and, as it turned out, commencing on my life's work. My research revealed that the women I worked with had a lot of ambition but lacked the essential skills to help them get there. So I cashed in the savings bonds I received from my grandparents and utilized the proceeds to make the first loans to women. The demand for Zawadisha's services rose over time, Kenyan financial regulations changed, needs varied, and we learned a lot. So, over ten years ago, we made a significant shift. Show Less
